I started egging about 15 years ago when my parents started an emu farm; The Worley Bird Emu Ranch in Cottonwood, CA.
I work as a registered dental assistant for a dentist in Elk Grove, CA; a small town south of Sacramento. I use a highspeed dental drill that rotates at over 450,000 rpm and a dremel to carve through the 4 different layers of color found in the emu shells.
The outer layer of an emu egg is a beautiful emerald green, sometimes, almost black. Carving down past the outer layer reveals a grayish color then under that is a wonderful teal or turquoise color. Beyond the 2nd layer is a pure white, which is the final layer before cutting all the way through.
I use all the colors found naturally within the shell and I carve away the shell completely to create my egg sculptures.
You will not find any paint, glues or dyes on my eggs. I like to keep them in their most natural state! I use a UV protective spray to keep the egg's natural colors from fading. Natural might and artificial lighting will fade the emu egg to a gray if not protected.
Every egg is one of a kind ~ no two egg designs are ever alike! All my sculptures are signed, numbered and a Certificate of Authenticity is issued to each registered owner.
